Houston County Bar Association Wins State Bar of Georgia 2013 Law Day Award

The Houston County Bar Association was the chosen recipient of the 2013 Law Day Award for its exemplary efforts with regards to celebrating the national activity on the first of May this year. The award is bestowed annually to voluntary bars that provide noteworthy Law Day activities. The Law Day celebration included a presentation of scholarship awards to graduating high school seniors from Houston County that will be entering college in the fall. The six $500 scholarships were awarded to the rising college freshmen by current members of the Houston County Bar Association. Tommy Stalnaker, Chairman of the Houston County Board of Commissioners, was also present at the ceremony to issue a proclamation recognizing May 1, 2013 as Law Day in Houston County Georgia.
Every May, the Houston County Bar Association observes Law Day to commemorate the rule of law, the judiciary and its place in American society. The idea of a national Law Day was conceived in 1957 by American Bar Association President Charles Rhynes. In 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower established the first Law Day, and in 1961 the U.S. Congress issued a joint resolution making May 1 the official Law Day. The Houston County Bar Association will be acknowledged for its triumphs and will be presented the award at the State Bar of Georgia Annual Meeting in Hilton Head, S.C. this June.
