On Tuesday, September 3, 2013, the Houston County Bar Association presented the Liberty Bell Award to Sandra McGowan and George Potter. Ms. McGowan is the Clerk of Houston County Juvenile Court and Mr. Potter is the former City of Perry Public Safety Director.
The Liberty Bell Award is the most prestigious award given by lawyers to a non-lawyer. The purpose of the Award is to recognize community service that has strengthened the American system of freedom under law. The Liberty Bell Award is given for outstanding service in one of these areas: promoting a better understanding of our Constitution and the Bill of Rights; encouraging greater respect for law and the courts; stimulating a deeper sense of individual responsibility so that citizens recognize their duties as well as their rights; contributing to the effective functioning of our institutions of government; and, fostering a better understanding and appreciation of the rule of law.
The award recipients and their families were treated to a luncheon hosted by the members of the bar association at the Green Derby Inn in Perry. Speakers recognized the achievements and contributions of Ms. McGowan and Mr. Potter to the legal community. Said speakers were Stephen Hollomon, Deborah Edwards, Kelly Burke, and George Hartwig. Each recipient received a plaque and their names will be added to the permanent Liberty Bell plaque at the Houston County Superior Court.
